About Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a transformative oasis amid the rugged landscapes of Northern Kenya. It stands as a testament to the ever-growing grassroots movement of community-focused conservation that is sweeping across the region. Established within the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County, this remarkable sanctuary represents the very first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa.
More than just a haven for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, Reteti is a symbol of unity and dedication to preserving the natural world. Officially inaugurated in August 2016, the sanctuary’s mission goes beyond traditional conservation approaches. It empowers the local Samburu community to take the lead in safeguarding these magnificent creatures and their habitat, fostering a deeper connection with nature while creating stability, employment, and sustainable revenue for the region. The sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to experience the profound connection between wildlife and the Samburu community, leaving visitors with a profound appreciation for the positive impact of grassroots initiatives on wildlife preservation.
